2010 Matching Grants Program

The San Francisco Japantown Foundation’s 2010 matching grants program will provide up to ten (10) organizations or groups with funding of up to $4,000, fifty percent of which will come from individual donors and the other fifty percent from a dollar-for-dollar match from the Foundation.

Organizations/groups selected for the matching grants program are being asked to encourage donations be made to the organization/group through the Foundation and we will match those earmarked donations dollar-for-dollar up to the amount requested by the applicant, but not more than $2,000, for a possible total grant of up to $4,000. In order to qualify for a match, donations for organizations/groups must be made to the Foundation by Midnight Pacific Time on April 30, 2010. The Foundation will provide sample letters, emails and other tools to help grantees share information about the matching grants program to their respective audiences.

In order for donations to qualify for the match: (1) donations must be contributed directly to the Foundation; (2) donations can be made by any entity, such as an individual, business or other nonprofit organization – but they cannot be made from the organization/group that will receive the grant from the Foundation; and (3) donations can be dated before the Feb. 22 start of the matching period, but must be received by the Foundation by Midnight Pacific Time on Friday, April 30, 2010.

Organizations/groups that qualify for the Foundation’s matching grants program may not count previous donations made directly to that organization/group and may not contribute directly to the Foundation in order to increase its earmarked donations to reach the $2,000 maximum.

If the total amount of donations earmarked to an organization/group is less than $2,000, the Foundation will match whatever amount is raised. Earmarked donations made to the Foundation for the purposes of the matching grants program, but received after the April 30 deadline, will be disbursed to the designated organization, but without a match.

The Foundation will announce the grant totals in May 2010.
